Understand the Risks, Know How to Respond: Jeli Community Strengthens Disaster Preparedness

02nd Nov 2026

Community & Nation Building

YTM continues to strengthen disaster preparedness through a Whole-of-Society approach, bringing together communities, government agencies, academia and strategic partners.

YTM recently conducted a Community-Based Disaster Risk Management Workshop in Jeli District, Kelantan, bringing together more than 100 participants, including community leaders, local residents, government agencies and members of the academic community.

The workshop forms part of YTM’s ongoing efforts to foster a culture of disaster preparedness, helping communities understand local risks and identify the appropriate actions to take during emergencies.

The programme was organised in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), the Kelantan State Government through the Kelantan State Secretary's Office, implementation partners RED A and BBNGO, as well as relevant local agencies, including the Fire and Rescue Department (BOMBA), Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Department of Social Welfare (JKM) and Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS).

Over two days, participants gained practical knowledge in risk mapping, community response planning, safety and evacuation procedures, flood alerts, emergency grab bag preparation, fire safety and registration at temporary evacuation centres (PPS). The workshop also provided a platform for communities and relevant agencies to exchange experiences, understand their respective roles and strengthen coordination ahead of disasters.

Since 2022, YTM has engaged more than 870 community members across Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan through its series of community-based disaster risk management initiatives.
